Water Taxi Service to Create Waves in Salford

An ambitious plan to create a water taxi service linking Salford Quays to Manchester city centre could be approved by council leaders as early as next week.

According to an article in Place North West, the Irwell River Park Taxi Project would provide a ferry service for commuters and leisure travellers between MediaCityUK and Chapel Wharf, close to the Lowry Hotel. Intermediate stops are proposed at the Imperial War Museum North, Old Trafford and Ordsall.

It is hoped the service would improve transport links and accessibility to the Irwell River Park, a long-term programme to improve Salford, Manchester and Trafford’s waterways along the Manchester Ship Canal and River Irwell.

Developer LPC Living, the Salford-based company owned by the Pervaiz Naviede Family Trust, has welcomed the announcement having already invested more than £50m into the regeneration of the Ordsall estate.

Marketing manager, Scott Neal, said “Unlike many cities, Salford is blessed with wonderful waterways yet for many years these have been sadly underused. The proposed water taxi service would not only bring new life to the waterfront but should also encourage more people to visit the area’s many attractions such as Ordsall Hall and MediaCityUK.”

If approved by Salford City Council a planning application would be submitted next month with the proposed service starting running from Easter 2014.
