Healthy Living is Worth its Weight in Gold

Dubai’s leaders have hit on an unusual way to encourage residents to lose weight: they are running a scheme for the next 30 days where participants can win a gram of gold for every kilogram of weight they lose.

Obesity is an increasing concern for Dubai’s two million inhabitants with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) currently ranked the fifth fattest nation in the world. It’s estimated that collectively the population is carrying 17 million tonnes of excess weight.

Junk food, over-eating and lack of exercise are major factors with the average person in the UAE consuming more than 3,000 calories a day.

By launching the initiative, called You are Worth Your Weight in Gold, it’s hoped residents will reconsider their unhealthy lifestyles. Participants will get guidance on healthy weight loss and then are free to lose as much as they want as long as they stick within the rules.

Those entering the competition are required to lose at least two kilos before qualifying for any gold. At that point they will receive about £30 worth of gold for each kilo they lose. The first weigh-in took place earlier this month with a second planned for mid-August.

The three participants to lose the most will be entered into a draw to win a gold coin worth AED 20,000 (£3,500). The scheme is being run during Ramadan, which sees a month of fasting by Muslims around the world.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality said in a statement: “Ramadan is the most appropriate period to launch an initiative such as this as it reminds us about the health benefits of reducing weight and encourages us to take strong steps to improve our lifestyles.”

A spokesperson for Arabian Falcon Holidays, which markets properties on behalf of the Pervaiz Naviede Family Trust said, “We usually give gifts of gold to clients who purchase timeshare products at the Royal Club, so what better incentive to encourage residents to adopt healthier lifestyles. Once again, we’re impressed by the authorities’ drive to have people in Dubai not only enjoy the City but to be fit and healthy.”
